Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about JustYouWrite.

Is it free?

Yes. The daily writing challenge - a new prompt every day, streak tracking, and your writing history - is completely free and will remain so. Future optional features (AI feedback, long-form writing tools) will require a paid subscription to cover the costs of those features. But those will always be clearly labelled and fully opt-in.

Do I need an account?

No. JustYouWrite's daily challenges work without any sign-up. There is nothing to register, no email address required, and no password to forget. You open the page and write. Your streak and history are stored locally in your browser - they belong to you, not to us.

For more advanced features and for cross device storage you will need an account, but this is fully optional and opt-in.

Where is my data stored?

Everything is stored in your browser. Your writing, your streak, your settings - none of it is sent to a server. It lives on the device you use, in the browser you use it in.

If you want to backup your data securely, want to keep it across devices, or want to use more advanced features we offer the ability to sign up for an account. With an account, your data is securely stored within LootLocker. You can request your account removed or data exported at any time through your profile.

What happens if I miss a day?

Your streak resets to zero. That's it. Your history is still there - all of your previous entries are still readable on the History page. A broken streak is not a punishment and it is not the end; it is just information. The important thing is that you come back. Building the habit of returning matters more than maintaining a number.

Will there ever be an account or sync feature?

Yes, in a later release. Accounts would make sync and backup possible, and they would unlock additional paid features. If and when accounts are introduced, they will be entirely optional - the free, accountless experience will remain fully functional. We will never require an account to use the core daily challenge.

How long does a prompt take?

The prompts are designed to be completable in 10–20 minutes. There is no word count requirement - write a paragraph or write a page. The optional countdown timer is there to give you a boundary if that helps you focus; it is not a deadline. You can submit your entry at any time. What matters most is that any time spent writing is better than no time at all. If you can write for 2 minutes a day from your phone, then you've already done more than you did before, and more than the vast majority of aspiring writers out there.

What kind of prompts are there?

The prompts are creative writing prompts - scenes to write, characters to explore, moments to capture, or perspectives to inhabit. They are not writing exercises or grammar drills. The goal is to get you writing something you would not have written without a nudge.

What is the AI stuff about?

Future versions of JustYouWrite will include optional AI features: feedback on your writing after you submit, and tools to help writers make progress on longer projects. All of these are opt-in, and they all require you to supply your own API key (BYOK - bring your own key). We do not bundle an AI subscription. We do not send your writing off to an AI vendor without your consent. We do not alter your writing. Any and all AI features are there to act as a coach, an editor, and a memory bank letting you focus on crafting the story you always dreamt of.
